US Inspector Concludes No WMD in Iraq - 2004-10-06

The chief U.S. weapons inspector in Iraq has submitted his final report to U.S. lawmakers, concluding former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction at the time of the U.S. - led invasion.

Charles Duelfer is also expected to testify to the Senate Armed Services committee today (Wednesday) that Saddam Hussein did not have any concrete plans to develop chemical, nuclear or biological weapons.

The Bush administration had cited Iraq's alleged stockpiles and pursuit of banned weapons as a key reason for going to war in March, 2003.

U.S. officials say Mr. Duelfer's 1,500 page report concludes Iraq's weapons program had decayed since the 1991 Gulf War. But, officials say the report finds the former Iraqi leader wanted to restart weapons programs if he escaped United Nations sanctions -- which he tried to subvert.

The White House says President Bush has been briefed on the report.
