Uma Bharati Suspended from BJP - 2004-11-10

India's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has fired its feisty female leader, Uma Bharati, from a top political post.

The party suspended Ms. Bharati from the general secretary's post Wednesday after she stormed out of a meeting to protest what she called a political conspiracy to discredit her.

She accused some top party leaders of doing off-the-record briefings against her that, she said, are appearing as newspaper headlines.

Party President Lal Krishna Advani expressed anger over her tirade and suspended her from the party membership and the post.

Ms. Bharati was the chief minister of India's largest state of Madhya Pradesh until August when her party forced her to resign because of a court case against her. Later, she was named the party's general secretary.
