Dr Saifur Rahman , an electrical engineer and Professor at Virginia Tech recently attended seminars on the prospect of setting up a Nuclear Power Station in Bangladesh. In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service Dr Rahman said that in spite of the possibility of setting up a Nuclear Power station in Bangladesh , one needs to be very cautious about such projects.
He said that the major problem of nuclear power generation is the scarcity of fuel. For other types of power productions we get fuels in open market. Nuclear fuels cannot be procured in open markets. It is not only because of the cost of the nuclear fuel that it is difficult to procure but also it involves geo-politics and security issues. He recommends that before we embark on such projects we should make sure that we have undiminished source of fuel otherwise the power generation can be affected in the midway. He also referred to a recent MoU signed between Bangladesh and Russia.
