Pakistani Soldiers Battle Tribal Militants, Casualties Reported

Pakistani officials say tribal militants in the troubled southwestern province of Baluchistan have attacked a paramilitary convoy, killing three soldiers and wounding seven others. The officials say an unknown number of tribesmen were also killed or wounded in the clashes in the Dera Bugti area on Thursday.

Tribal lawmakers told the National Assembly in Islamabad that at least 50 people were killed. The claims could not be independently verified. Baluchi tribesmen have been fighting for more royalties for the natural resources extracted from their region. President Pervez Musharraf ordered thousands of troops into Baluchistan in January after the rebels rocketed Pakistan's biggest gas field at Sui, killing eight people. The rebels said the attack was retaliation for the rape of a woman doctor at the facility.
