Rice: Spreading Ideas Key in Ending Extremism

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the United States alone cannot end extremism in the Middle East.

In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Ms. Rice said the only thing the United States can do is spread the ideas of liberty and freedom. The rest, she said, will have to take its own course. She credited U.S. government news agencies -- including the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe -- with helping spread accurate and timely news to people in countries that repress or censor the media.

Ms. Rice also acknowledged that educational exchanges, which have dropped in number since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, also play a key role in spreading democratic ideals. She said additional funds have been requested to increase the exchanges.
