Indian officials have found the bodies of more Hindu pilgrims who drowned Saturday when flood gates at a dam were opened. The death toll is now 58.
Police in Madhya Pradesh say several pilgrims remain unaccounted for. They were among tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims who gathered for a religious festival on the banks of the Narmada River Saturday.
Officials at a dam upstream say they were not informed of the pilgrimage. They say water is routinely released from the dam as part of its power generating program.
The state chief minister (Babulal Gaur) who visited the site says an investigation is under way, and that families of those killed will receive compensation.
