Japanese PM Hopes to Meet With Chinese President

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi says he hopes to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Jakarta Saturday to help repair ties between the two countries. Beijing has not officially confirmed the meeting plans. On Friday, the first day of an Africa-Asia summit in Jakarta, Mr. Koizumi repeated an apology for Japan's World War Two-era atrocities. He said Japan caused "tremendous damage and suffering" to the people of many nations, particularly to citizens of Asian countries. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman (Kong Quan) said Bejing welcomed the apology, but added that Tokyo must back its words with action. The apology came as 80 Japanese lawmakers Friday visited Tokyo's controversial Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japan's war dead, including convicted war criminals.
