The head of the UN nuclear watchdog agency says a nuclear weapons test by North Korea would have disastrous political effects in Asia and the rest of the world.
Mohamed ElBaradei also said Friday that such a test by Pyongyang could lead to a dissemination of radioactivity in the region. He called on world leaders who are in contact with North Korea to persuade the country not to conduct a nuclear test. Mr. ElBaradei spoke on the sidelines of a U.N. nuclear non-proliferation conference in New York. He made his remarks in light of a New York Times report that U.S. officials are monitoring recent satellite images of North Korea that appear to show major preparations for a nuclear test. The United States says a nuclear test by Pyongyang would be a "provocative act."
