Police in southern Bangladesh say at least 11 people are dead and more than 70 others are missing after an overloaded passenger ferry capsized in bad weather and strong tides on a remote stretch of river. Local authorities say rescue workers have recovered the bodies of 10 people, including several children, and that more bodies are feared trapped inside the sunken ferry. Witnesses say at least 20 people managed to swim to safety. Ferries are an essential mode of transportation for many Bangladeshis, and ferry accidents claim hundreds of lives in the impoverished country every year. At least 149 people died near the capital, Dhaka, when a ferry capsized there in February.
