A truck allegedly smuggling munitions has exploded in a remote Pakistani tribal region near the border with Afghanistan, killing the two people in the vehicle. A local official Anwar Zeb said the truck was traveling through South Waziristan when it suddenly exploded on Saturday. He said Pakistani officials are investigating who arranged for the private vehicle to carry the weapons and what its intended destination was. Afghan and US officials say militants hiding in South Waziristan and other Pakistani tribal areas have been conducting hit-and-run attacks on US and Afghan forces inside Afghanistan. Islamabad has conducted several major operations in the tribal regions, in an attempt to find al-Qaida and Taleban fighters who fled to the area after the Taleban government was ousted in Afghanistan in 2001.
