Fireworks Blamed in Karachi Fire

Pakistani officials say stray fireworks are to blame for the major fire at a petrochemical plant in Karachi.

The fire broke out late Saturday in Karachi's Korangi district, at a lubricant manufacturing unit of the state oil company near the National Refinery.

Investigators suspect fireworks from a nearby wedding ceremony triggered the blaze, which took hours to bring under control. The extent of the damage has not been determined, but authorities say the fire is not expected to affect local oil supplies.

Four firefighters were injured but their injuries are said to be minor. Karachi is Pakistan's commercial center and largest city, with a population of well over 12 million people.
