Hello Washington: Rabindranath Tagore’s Relevance in the Modern World

In our today’s call-in-show, on the occasion of the upcoming 64th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate in Bengali literature, our listeners asked questions on the relevance of Tagore’s works and philosophy in the modern world.

In the backdrop of the violence and terrorism of the contemporary world, the need for Tagore’s philosophy of peace and tranquility was highlighted in the discussion. Our distinguished guests were Professor Jyotirmoy Ghose, a former Rabindra Professor of Calcutta University and Dr Ghulam Murshid, an eminent writer and researcher who is also a former Professor of Rajshahi University. Dr Ghose and Dr Murshid emphasized the basic philosophy of Tagore and said that more good translations of his Bengali writings are needed and they added that in spite of all the temporal changes, Tagore will live in his songs, plays and paintings. Tagore can inspire both a new generation of writers in the literary world and also help bring peace in the society.
