Bush Signs Massive Aid Package for Hurricane Victims

President Bush has signed a bill promising another 51-point-eight billion dollars in relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The House of Representatives and the Senate passed the emergency aid earlier Thursday. Mr. Bush said the storm victims have immediate needs that must be met without delay. He says more resources will be needed to help people get back on their feet. Congress and Mr. Bush have so far approved more than 63-billion dollars in storm aid.

Meanwhile, thousands of police and National Guard troops are going door-to-door in New Orleans to completely evacuate the city. Some residents are voluntarily leaving, while thousands of others refuse to leave their homes despite contaminated floodwaters and the risk of fire. Authorities are finding the bodies of more victims as floodwaters are pumped out of New Orleans. Authorities warn the death toll could reach into the thousands.
