A suicide bomber has struck an open-air market in Israel, killing at least five people and wounding 30 others. The bomber was among the dead.
The Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack Wednesday in the coastal town of Hadera.
Militant leaders said the bombing was in retaliation for Israel's killing of a senior Islamic Jihad official in the West Bank on Sunday.
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack, saying it harms Palestinian interests and violates an eight-month-old ceasefire.
An Israeli government spokesman, Mark Regev also denounced the attack.
In Washington, a spokesman, Scott McClellan for the White House called the bombing a heinous attack on civilians. He also said Palestinian officials must do more to end such violence and disarm militants.
