Mixed Feelings on the Possibilities  SAFTA Materialization

Mohammad Zamir , a former diplomat has expressed his doubts that South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) would come into effects from January 1, 2006. In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service Ambassador Zamir says that there were number of issues concerning which needed to be resolved and he did not think that these issues could be resolved by next month. But the President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FBBCI) Mir Nasir Hossain also said that unless the issues were resolved first, it is highly unlikely that SAFTA could start functioning from eearly next year. He, however, hoped that by the time the next ministerial meeting is held, things would resolve. The Executive Director of Center for Policy Dialogue(CPD) says that as decisions for SAFTA has been taken at the highest level, it is likely to materialize, even from the first of January. It would depend on the size of the trade.
