Security forces are on alert in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, and surrounding areas before a major anti-government rally scheduled for Tuesday. Officials say at least eight thousand police and troops will be deployed in Dhaka alone to guard against possible violence by outlawed Islamic groups. Fourteen opposition parties led by the Awami League of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called the rally to begin a new series of demonstrations and general strikes aimed at ousting the government. Opposition leaders say they expect at least one million supporters from across the country to attend -- what they call -- "the grand rally." Bangladeshi police recently arrested nine suspected Islamic militants and seized bomb components in a series of raids.
