The president of Comair Airlines says a crewmember is the sole survivor of crash that killed 49 people in the U.S. state of Kentucky on Sunday.
Authorities said the plane crashed and burned soon after takeoff from the city of Lexington airport. Aviation officials say the runway it used may have been too short for the type of plane.
Comair's president ,Don Bornhorst said 47 passengers and a crew of three were on flight 5191 bound for Atlanta, (n the southern state of Georgia.
The plane's first officer is being treated at a Lexington hospital and is reported in critical condition.
An airport official ,Michael Gobb said the two engine (Bombardier model CRJ-200) jet experienced difficulty on departure and crashed about two kilometers from the runway.
A witness said he heard an explosion and saw smoke near the airport at the time of the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
