Fulbright Scholar Dr. Amal Mitra Speaks About Lead Poisoning in Bangladesh


Dr. Amal Mitra of the University of Southern Mississippi was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholar Program Grant for 2007-08. He will be going to Bangladesh in August to research lead poisoning in children.

Dr. Mitra is a professor at the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Southern Mississippi University.

In an interview with Voice of America, Dr. Mitra spoke about the serious health problem in Bangladesh arising from lead poisoning. He also spoke about other infectious diseases, like diarrhea and pneumonia in Bangladesh that affect children and adults. Last week Dr. Mitra attended the Orientation Program for the Fulbright Scholars in Washington D.C.

As a Fulbright Scholar Dr. Mitra will join the ranks of 279,500 alumni worldwide to increase understanding among the 155 countries that participate in the program, including the United States.
