President Bush has called on Americans to show more patience, more courage and more sacrifice in the Iraq war as the United States celebrates the Independence Day holiday.
Mr. Bush made the comment on Wednesday during a speech to a National Guard unit in the eastern city of Martinsburg, West Virginia. The president also called on Americans to volunteer to help the families of troops.
On the Fourth of July in 1776, Americans in what is now the United States, declared their independence from Britain.
Communities across the country are sponsoring parades and patriotic ceremonies today, along with picnics and other recreational activities. In Washington, day-long festivities include a large fireworks display over the Washington Monument.
