Rescue Efforts for Trapped Miners Continue in Utah

An owner of a coal mine in the western U.S. state of Utah says it will take at least three days for rescuers to reach the location where six miners are trapped more than 450 meters below the ground.

Robert Murray of Crandall Canyon mine said Tuesday there is no way to know if the miners are dead or alive. But he said if they are alive, they have plenty of water and air supplies to sustain them until they are rescued.

Murray also insisted the mine collapse was caused by an earthquake. But U.S. government scientists say seismic measurements may have been recording the mine collapse.

There has been no contact with the workers since the mine collapsed early Monday. The miners are trapped in a shaft more than 500 meters away from the rescue base.
