Bangladesh Chief Advisor Speaks to the Nation


Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed on Wednesday said curfew and shutdown of universities and colleges are temporary measures against violence, assuring that the curfew would be withdrawn immediately after the situation improves.

In an address to the nation over state-owned radio and television, the Chief Advisor said the government has imposed curfew and taken other measures to protect public life and property as well as stop illegal activities. He said the government showed utmost patience in the evolving situation.

The Chief Advisor said the government hoped the people irrespective of class and profession would extend all cooperation to the administration in maintaining peace and discipline in society and the trend of democratic and economic progress.

Dr Fakhruddin said that the government on Tuesday expressed deep regret and hastened to take steps in accordance with demand of the students of Dhaka University.

The measures included withdrawal of army camp from the campus, formation of a Judicial Inquiry Commission to probe into the incidents and taking action against the persons responsible for the incidents.
