Five University Teachers in Bangladesh are on Police Remand


Police on Saturday took the detained Dhaka University (DU) teachers Prof. Dr Anwar Hossain and Prof Dr Harun-ur-Rashid on a four-day remand on charge of holding rallies in violation of Emergency Power Rules-2007 and aiding students in creating anarchy on the DU campus.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) president Azizul Bari Helal was also taken on a five-day police remand on the same charge.

The detained two DU teachers and the JCD president were shown arrested under Section 16(2) of the Emergency Power Rules-2007.

In Rajshahi, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court , Rajshahi, granted a 10-day remand for the arrested teachers Prof Saidur Rahman Khan, former Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University and a teacher at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, Prof Abdus Sobhan, convener of Progressive Teachers' Alliance and teacher at the same department, and Prof Moloy Kumar Bhoumik of the Department of Management.

Members of the joint forces arrested Prof Anwar Hossain and Prof Harun-ur-Rashid from their Campus residence at Fuller Road on the DU campus in the small hours of Friday. Prof Anwar Hossain and Prof Harun-ur-Rashid of Dhaka University are facing charges of "illegal attacks and property damage" during a recent DU violence.

In the meantime Bangladesh government has formed an enquiry committee to find out the motive behind the turmoil.
