Family Members of Detained Professors in Bangladesh Express Woes And Anguish


Following a serious brawl last week between some students of Dhaka University and a group of Army personnel, as the situation deteriorated throughout the country army went on a crackdown and the joint forces picked up five university teachers at late night on August 23rd for their alleged role in the disturbances.

Two of the teachers from Dhaka University have been put on a four-day remand for the second time and three teachers from Rajshahi University are on a ten day remand.

Dhaka University teachers Thursday claimed in the magistrate court that they were allegedly tortured mentally and is punished through sleep deprivation. In this context the family members of some of these detained teachers, against whom no formal charges have been brought, have expressed their woe and anguish on the report of alleged mental torture.

They firmly said that these teachers were not involved with later disturbances which flared across Bangladesh. The members of the family urged on the government to look at the matter more humanly considering their age and the place in the society. They also said that the campus strike was supported not by any individual, but by the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association , as a composite body.
