The season’s second spell of severe flooding has already hit 16 districts in Bangladesh as receding water from the upper riparian areas coupled with heavy rainfalls swelled the rivers to above their danger levels and inundated vast areas.
People in large numbers from flood-prone areas in northern and southern districts have started rushing to shelters for the second time this year.
The prevailing flood situation in Sylhet district is likely to deteriorate further and will spread to the districts of Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, and Netrakona by Sunday.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center also said that the situation in the south-eastern districts of Feni, Chittagonj, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazaar, already experiencing flash floods, may worsen by Sunday. The Padma was also rising and flowing 25cm above the danger level at Goalundo and 18cm at Bhagyakul on Saturday.
The Jamuna, which was flowing 35cm above the danger mark at Sirajganj on Saturday, will rise further and spill over at Bahadurabad, Chilmari, and Aricha by Sunday , the officials from weather department said. There has been reports of flood water level rising both at Kurigram and at Sirajganj .
