UN Secretary General to meet with UN Envoy about Burma

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says he will meet with his special envoy Ibrahim Gambari on Thursday to discuss the violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Burma.

Mr. Ban said Gambari delivered a strong message to Burma's military government during his four-day visit to the nation this week.

Soon after Gambari left Burma, government troops on Wednesday increased efforts to intimidate pro-democracy activists in the capital Rangoon.

Troops patrolled city streets, using loudspeakers to warn residents that people who took part in last week's protests will be found and arrested.

Residents say Burmese security forces detained many people in pre-dawn raids on homes near Rangoon's Shwedagon Pagoda, the country's holiest shrine.

The U.N. Security Council is expected to meet Friday to discuss the human rights situation in Burma.
