Three US Airmen Killed in Iraq, Polish Soldier Killed

The U.S. military says three U.S. airmen have been killed in Iraq. The military says the three died near Balad Air Base, north of Baghdad, during combat operations Thursday.

A military statement did not provide information on how the three died. Hours earlier, the Polish Defense Ministry said a Polish soldier was killed by a roadside bomb, bringing to 22 the number of Polish troops killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Defense Minister Aleksander Szczyglo told a news conference in Warsaw that three other soldiers were wounded, including one seriously, in the blast today (Friday) in Diwaniyah. Donald Tusk, who is expected to become Poland's prime minister later this month, was quoted in an interview Wednesday saying he wants to pull Poland's 900 troops out of Iraq next year. In other news, the U.S. military says it killed 10 terrorists and detained one suspect in an operation in Salman Pak targeting al-Qaida networks.
