Bush Calls Musharraf, Pushes for Elections

President Bush says he spoke to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday for the first time since the Pakistani leader declared a state of emergency on Saturday.

Mr. Bush says he urged General Musharraf to hold elections quickly and to resign from his post as military chief.

Speaking to reporters just outside Washington alongside French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Mr. Bush said he and General Musharraf had a frank discussion.

Mr. Sarkozy described the situation in Pakistan as "worrisome," in part because Pakistan is a nuclear-armed country with extremists in the region. He stressed that France is urging Pakistan to hold elections as quickly as possible.
