Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has condemned the assassination of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Iranian state media say Mr. Ahmadinejad told his cabinet Sunday that Ms. Bhutto was an influential political figure in Pakistan. He offered condolences to Ms. Bhutto's family, the Pakistani people and the government.
Mr. Ahmadinejad blamed the attack on what he called the "visible or invisible" hands of an enemy that has targeted Pakistan's independence. He did not elaborate. The Iranian president called on Pakistani politicians to try to restore calm through dialogue and maintain the country's unity.
