Calcutta High Court has ordered elimination of polluting
public transport from Calcutta streets from April 1, 2009.
This will mean
withdrawal of 70% of buses. Auto-rickshaws have been asked to modify their
engine and use only gas as fuel. The order has infuriated bus and auto unions.
In fact, earlier attempts to ban the polluting vehicles from the
city failed due to strong resistance.
Goutam Gupta has the details.
