US Congress Holds Hearing on Bangladesh


Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) participated in a hearing of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom titled, "Bangladesh: Religious Freedom, Extremism, Security, and the Upcoming National Elections."

Other participants included, James Moriarty, U.S. ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Manikas, regional director of Asia Programs at the National Democratic Institute, Dr. Ali Riaz of Illinois State University, Shapan Adnan of the National University of Singapore, Asif Saleh, founder and executive director Drishtipat, Dr. Sachi Dastidar, state University, New York and Kimber Shearer, deputy director of Asia Programs at the International Republican Institute.

Ambassador Moriarty said that US interests in Bangladesh revolve around three mutually reinforcing principles, which he referred to as “3 Ds – Democracy, Development and Denial of space for terrorism.”
