Nazrul is the Harbinger of Humanism in Bengali Literature : Professor  Mohammad Abu Zaafar

Professor Mohammad Abu Zaafar from the Department of Bengali, Dhaka University , in this interview with VOA Bangla Service, talks about the special features of Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and says that he is essentially a poet of mankind who sings the victory of humanism above all other isms . On the occasion of Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 110th birth anniversary, Professor Zaafar says that Nazrul , in spite of apparent contrasts and contradiction was essentially a poet of humanity .

Although some quarters have tried several times to portray poet Nazrul as essentially a Muslim poet and even those who had disowned Nazrul once had later tried to mark him as an Islamic poet , Nazrul has to be understood and evaluated rising above stereotyped boxed ideas.

It is true that Nazrul wrote both about Islam and Hinduism but apart from his occasional poetic passions he was neither a devout Muslim nor a committed Hindu. Nazrul centered his idea around humanism and stood for it all through his life rising above the divisive nature of any kind.

There was a sense of integration matched with Nazrul’s own integrity which always celebrated Mankind above anything else .
