Senior Journalist evaluates Awami League on its 60th Foundation Day

Golam Sarwar is an eminent journalist in Bangladesh. He is the editor of a Bengali newspaper, The Shamokal . In this exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Awami League , Golam Sarwar analyzes the evolution of this party through the passage of history. He says that Awami League has swung between the left and the right but has eventually taken the Centrist and Nationalistic position in the Country.

While answering a question about the strength of the party Golam Sarwar says that its strength lies at the grass-root level where there are millions of dedicated supporters of the party and that indeed is the reason that the party survived even after the murder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four national leaders. He also pointed out to the weaknesses of the party which include absence of recognition for the dedicated ordinary members of the party, occasionally compromising with fundamentalist religious parties and not recognizing other coalition members while in power.

However, Golam Sarwar says that in spite of number of criticisms against Awami League and although the new government went through several troublesome times, there are hopeful indications that the government is working towards fulfilling its election pledges.
