Police in Bangladesh have opened fire on a protest by garment industry workers, killing one demonstrator and injuring 30.
Police and witnesses said thousands of workers gathered (in Ashulia) just outside Dhaka Saturday to demand unpaid wages and protest cuts to their salaries.
Police said security personnel started shooting when the demonstrators became violent.
The garment industry is a key part of the Bangladesh economy. Garment
factories across the region have been struggling as a result of the
global recession.
