Maoists Kill Two Communist Party Members

Maoists killed two members of the Communist Party of India-Marxist. The victims Swapan Debsingha and Tarini Mahato were found near a ditch in the forest area of Memul. Maoists had abducted them on Sunday night.

Although the state government had taken initiatives to free the area of Maoists rebels, Maoists have managed to create panic among the villagers.

The Maoists also raided a community hall and detonated a landmine and left behind posters eulogizing their ideology.

Although security forces continue operations to flush out rebels in villages there, West Midnapore and neighboring districts of Purulia and Bankura have seen an escalation in maoist violence since last week.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2006 described the Maoists -- known in India as 'Naxalites' -- as a "virus" and ranked them along with Islamic militants as a serious threat to the country's internal security.

New Delhi last month slapped a formal ban on the Maoists, officially designating the group as a terrorist organization.
