The government of Bangladesh has started a crackdown on Islami Chhatra Shibir. Government agencies have received orders to conduct operations necessary to identify Shibir elements in educational institutions all around Bangladesh and uproot their influence.
Police arrested at least 200 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Sylhet. Maulana Ataur Rahman, Rajshahi Metropolitan Unit Chief, has also been arrested in connection with the killing of Chhatra League member Faruk Hossain at Rajshahi University.
In Dhaka, after a clash between Shibir and the Police, 9 Shibir activists were arrested. 1 more activist was arrested when Zillur Rahman’s car was stopped because of Shibir demonstrations that took place while he was on his way to meet Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul. In Chapai Nobabgonj, 1 Shibir leader is now dead. In Sylhet, after a clash that continued for half an hour, at least 30 people were injured, including 3 police and 1 RAB member.
