In an exclusive interview with VOA, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed speaks about the sacrifice of his mother and the recognition of the 29th of March as the internationally acknowledged day to honor the sacrifice of mothers in the liberation war of Bangladesh which began in March of 1971.
Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, a physician in Philadelphia, is the son of late Dr. Shamsuddin Ahmed, Chief of Surgery Department in Sylhet Medical Hospital, who was killed by Pakistani forces during the war. He recalls the hardship of his mother during the war and later.
He is also one of the organizers of the widely recognized program to acknowledge and honor the hardship of mothers. Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed speaks about this significant approach taken by a group of Bangladeshi Americans in order to pay a special tribute to the mothers, whose sacrifices are often ignored.
