Shock and Anger as Bangladesh Protests Against Assassination Attempt on the Opposition Leader - 2004-08-23

Violence erupted Sunday in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh as angry mobs went on the rampage to protest against a series of blasts at an Awami League rally Saturday that left 18 people killed and more than 200 wounded.

Panic gripped the capital in the morning when law enforcers recovered two live grenades, one each from the Ramna Hawkers Market and the Dhaka Central Jail.

Protestors set fire on a Dhaka-bound inter-city passenger train at Bhairab when they clashed with law enforcers and pro-government elements. Local Awami League units observed general strikes at least in 10 districts.
