54 Dead in Northern China Plane Crash - 2004-11-21

The crash of a passenger plane in northern China has claimed the lives of all 53 people aboard the plane and one person on the ground.

The China Eastern Airlines Shanghai-bound jet plunged into an ice-covered lake just seconds after taking off from Baotou city in Inner Mongolia.

Witnesses said they heard a blast while the plane was still in the air. Falling fragments of the plane damaged a house and several yachts.

A full list of victims has not been released, but Xinhua said one of the passengers was Indonesian. Emergency crews have yet to find the two "black box" in-flight recorders that could help determine the cause of the accident.

The plane was a Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ-200. China has grounded all its other Bombardier CRJ-200s.
