Hello Washington: India’s Recent General Election: Impact on West Bengal Politics

India's 15th Lok Sabha, or Parliament election, produced unexpected results. The election not only brought back the Congress Party-led UPA government to power for the second term, it delivered a severe blow to the power of the left parties, especially the CPM Party that was in power in three Indian states - West Bengal, Kerala, and Tripura. The CPM party-led Left Front Coalition government has been ruling the state of West Bengal for more than three decades.

The result of the Lok Sabha election has a great impact on the politics of West Bengal and there is a strong belief that a serious change is coming to the state after three decades. The whole of India eagerly looks on the political development in the state. That is the subject of discussion in today's program.
