Guest: Mr. Mohammed Elias
Secretary-General of Myanmar Muslim Association of Netherland (MMAN)
Based in Amsterdam, Netherland
Topic: Opinion: The main purpose of the military coup in Burma/Myanmar
Mr. Mohammed Elias told VOA Rohingya Lifeline that there are two main purposes for the military coup.
1st: General Ming Aung Hlaing is about to retire, and he must face the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC) with Rohingya’s genocide cases. As well as he also committed crimes against humanity, a war crime, and ethnic cleansing on other minorities, like Shan, Kachin, and Mon. So, without power, no one would save him.
The second reason is reason is that after the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) landslide victory for the 2020 election, the Chief of Army Min Aung Hlaing's final proposals were unsuccessful, the compromise between the need for a Presidential seat and the demands of conservation. It was the main reason for the military coup to save itself.
He added, we, the Rohingya expatriates and the people in the refugee camps stand with the people of Myanmar and we are part of the people of Myanmar because we all need a federal democratic government, and we must be free from military dictatorship. Everyone believes that human rights can only be achieved and exercised under a democratic constitution and we must establish a democratic government and that is very possible.
