Interviewer: Hamid Hussain (VOA Rohingya Lifeline reporter)
Guest: Mufizul Islam
Freelance Journalist and Writer
Based in Yangon, Myanmar
Topic: Update on the situation in Myanmar.
Translation Summary: Mufizul Islam, a freelance Journalist told VOA Rohingya Lifeline that Myanmar's banking system collapsed as people lost confidence in the junta after the February 1st military coup. The price of gold and the exchange rate of the dollar reached a record high of 1,700 kyat to the dollar as customers were withdrawing cash to buy US dollars and gold. Everyday useful basic things like oil and medicine prices skyrocketed in the market and are exceedingly rare due to no foreign import. Domestic production also becomes higher prices; however, people are still able to survive but cannot predict what will happen in the future.
He said, next month of June is the school admission season in Myanmar, but the Minister of NUG, Dr. Zaw Way Soe urged their parents not to enroll their children because there is a possibility of many explosions at schools planned by the military, and this could lead to deadly incident and later the military will blame the NUG (National Unity Government) for it. He also suggested that students in colleges and universities should not enroll in military-run colleges or universities. The NUG would arrange to have an online or offline learning system for all students at colleges and universities.
There is no way to stop the public protests against the military coup in using various strategies and it continues across the country. The military has targeted the arrest of well-known Burmese artists, including actors who have been associated in Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and has warned that they will be prosecuted under Section 505. Some artists were paid a bribe of 20 million kyats to remove their names from the blacklisted of military intelligence, but some are not able to settle it.
Myanmar’s military combat has changed the system and they have received a variety of weapons from China, such as military information technology, drones, and fighter jets. They first observe with drones before the attack and then use warplanes rather than ground warfare. The president of the National Unity Government acknowledged that for the newly formed PDF (People's Defense Forces) would not be easy to defend or repel the well-equipped Myanmar army in a short period of time, but victory would take time, Mufizul Islam told VOA Rohingya Lifeline during the short interview from Yangon.
