Pakistan Agrees to Provide Security for Iran-India Gas Pipeline

Pakistan says it will provide security for a proposed gas pipeline from Iran to India. Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Wednesday a pipeline to carry gas across Pakistan to India would be an important confidence-building measure.

During a meeting with Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zangeneh in Islamabad, Mr. Aziz called the pipeline -- quote -- "a win-win proposition for Iran, India and Pakistan." The idea of a gas line linking Iran and India surfaced in the 1990s, but tensions between India and Pakistan prevented the project from getting underway.

Oil ministers from Iran and Pakistan also agreed Wednesday to begin exporting Iranian gas to Pakistan.
