India Test Fires Surface-to-Air Missile

Indian defense officials say a surface-to-air missile performed successfully in Friday's test in the eastern state of Orissa.

The Akash missile was fired from the country's main Chandipur-on-Sea testing site, about 200 kilometers northeast of the state capital, Bhubaneswar.

The Akash missile has a range of approximately 25 kilometers. It is one of five missiles being developed by India's state-run Defense Research and Development Organization.

India and neighboring nuclear rival, Pakistan, routinely test their missile systems. They have an agreement to notify each other before conducting the tests.
