Iraqi President Appeals to World Leaders for Help to Defeat Terrorists

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has appealed to world leaders for help in overcoming terrorists in his country.

In remarks at the U.N. World Summit Thursday, Mr. Talabani said Iraq is facing a brutal campaign of terror, with militants killing hundreds of Iraqis and destroying the country. He said the war on terror requires diverse, international help - not just for Iraq, but for the sake of the whole world.

The Iraqi president's remarks came hours after suicide bombers struck Baghdad for the second consecutive day, killing at least 24 people, most of them police officers. On Wednesday a series of bombings rocked the Iraqi capital, killing more than 150 people. The spike in violence follows a declaration of all-out war on Iraq's Shi'ite Muslims purportedly by al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
