At Least 26 Killed in Iraq Bombings

Bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital have killed at least 26 people and wounded nearly 60 others.

The worst of Wednesday's attacks was a car bomb that killed at least 23 people in a Shi'ite Muslim area of southeast Baghdad.

Meanwhile, gunmen in northern Iraq kidnapped an undetermined number of policemen after launching an attack on a police convoy that killed at least two people.

The attacks followed an even bloodier day Tuesday, when bombs killed at least 68 people across Baghdad -- mostly at religious sites.

Sectarian violence has surged in Iraq since the bombing last Wednesday of the Askariya shrine in Samarra -- one of the holiest sites in Shi'ite Islam.

Since then, hundreds of people have been killed and dozens of mosques damaged in reprisal attacks between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims.
