New Study Indicates Fewer Tigers in West Bengal

Scientists say a study of the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve in India suggests the park has far fewer Bengal tigers than previously reported.

Preserve officials had claimed a population of 249 tigers after a 2004 survey. But researchers from the Indian Statistical Institute say a re-examination of the data indicates only about 64 tigers are left in the park.
