Former Indian Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar Dead at 80

Former Indian Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar has died in New Delhi. He was 80 years old, and had been suffering from a cancer of the blood.

Mr. Shekhar, a Socialist who was India's 11th prime minister, served from 1990 to 1991. He became prime minister after he split from the Janata Party and formed a coalition government that collapsed in eight months.

At the time of his death, Mr. Shekhar was a sitting member of India's house of parliament.
