Bangladesh and India on Sunday agreed on
"expeditious" exchange of criminals staying in either of the countries
as both the home secretaries on Sunday ended their two-day annual talks on wide
range of bilateral issues including cross- border security and terrorism.
In a joint statement
issued at a press conference joined by Bangladesh Home Secretary Abdul Karim
and his Indian counterpart Madhukar Gupta it said that
both sides agreed that
the verification process of released prisoners of one country held in the
prisons of the other should be expedited and modalities in this regard would be
worked out.
The statement said that
both sides also agreed "continue efforts" to track down criminals who
took shelter in either of the countries to evade justice and send them back
home "expeditiously."
The two home secretaries
said killing of civilians along the frontier had largely dominated their talks
while they agreed to put in their best efforts to reduce such incidents in
future.
Gupta e also referred to
the decision taken in the recently held talks between Bangladesh Rifles (BDR)
and Border Security Force (BSF) of India, suggesting joint visits to the
vulnerable areas along the frontlines and intensifying their communications to
evade the border violence.
