Afghan President Hamid Karzai told the United Nations General Assembly
Wednesday his country needs more help from the international community
to battle terrorism.
Mr. Karzai said terrorism has spread through the region like
"wildfire," and the international community must do more to bolster
Afghan security forces.
Other speakers today included Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who spoke
about the global economic crisis. He called on the international
community to work together on the issue, warning the crisis is likely
to worsen.
In other speeches, Israeli President Shimon Peres said his country is
ready to negotiate full peace with the Palestinians. He also described
Iran as a danger to the entire world. He said Iran continues to develop
enriched uranium and long-range missiles.
For Cuba, First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado blamed the global
food crisis on the "wastefulness and speculation" of a few countries in
the industrialized North.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe called for more resolute support from
the international community to free his country from what he called the
"horrors" of drug trafficking, terrorism and poverty.
The leaders spoke on the second day of the annual week-long General Assembly general debate.
