Gorkhaland Activists Call Strike in Darjeeling

The three hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling have been paralyzed by an indefinite strike called by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), a group fighting for an independent Gorkhaland.

Shops and offices were closed starting Monday and schools will be closed beginning Tuesday. Tourists and students have moved down to the plains as a result of the strike.

A GJM group left for Delhi for talks with MP Jaswant Singh who represents Darjeeling in Parliament. Talks held last year in Delhi failed to achieve any kind of compromise.
